E. A. Hughes Funeral Home, Inc. was founded in the Rosemont Section of Norfolk County, Virginia in 1952 by Norfolk native Elvin Alexander Hughes, Sr. and Alice A. Hughes. From it's original location on Albany Avenue and Chesapeake Boulevard, and subsequent locations in the Oakwood Community (Avenue E, and Chesapeake Boulevard), our facility is currently located at 7603 Merritt Street (at Sewells Point Road). A lightening strike fire occurring on July 7, 2004 has rendered this facility temporarily unavailable. Operations are currently being conducted from our Chatman/E.A. Hughes location. After the death of our founder, Elvin Alexander Hughes, Senior; March 7, 1997, daily management of the company has been assumed by Everard Auston Hughes with managerial oversight provided by Alice A. Hughes.



Chatman/E. A. Hughes Funeral Home

Chatman Funeral Home was founded in 1943 when George Primus Chatman acquired the Pendleton Funeral Home located at 711 East Liberty Street,in the prestigious Berkeley Community of Norfolk. After Mr. George P. Chatman's death in 1988, Mrs. Mattie "Kittie" Chatman, widow of the Founder, partnered with Elvin Alexander Hughes, Sr. to form the alliance which is now known as Chatman/E. A. Hughes funeral Home. The facility is located at 406 South Main Street at the corner of Indian River Road East.
