IMMEDIATE DEATH ACTIONS
Upon realizing the immediate death of a loved one, there are several actions required to be performed by the Next-of-Kin, designated agent of the Next-of-Kin or, care-provider as authorized by law.
RESIDENTIAL DEATHS
When a loved one dies in the residence, the following procedures are recommended:
- Call the police department and inform them that a death has just occurred. They will give you directives to follow.
- Contact the attending physician/hospice nurse to notify them of the death.
- Call us at (757) 545-5621 or 583-3403, and provide us with the name, location, and age of the deceased. We will travel to the place of death to immediately take custody of your loved one.
INSTITUTIONAL DEATHS
When death occurs in a healthcare or correctional facility, there are certain actions that are required by the Next-of-Kin, designated agent of the Next-of-Kin, or authorized care-provider.
- Notify the facility to release the remains of your loved one to Chatman/E. A. Hughes Funeral Home, 406 South Main Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23523; telephone number (757) 545-5621 or 583-3403
- Inform us that you want us to provide care to your loved one. Be prepared to provide basic information such as the location of the deceased, point-of-contact for the facility that is holding the remains of our loved one.
- Be available to sign the required release document to effect the release of your loved one's remains into our care.
Once we are notified of the death, we will immediately take action to take your loved one into our custody.
